The mini skirt has been named the most iconic fashion staple of all time

Gambar
THE mini skirt has been named the most iconic fashion statement of all time – ahead of the little black dress and hot pants. A study of 2,000 Brits revealed the most memorable style trends, which also saw knee high boots, denim jackets and skinny jeans feature in the top 10. Tie die t-shirts, which were made popular in the swinging sixties, also featured, along with flapper dresses of the 1920s and shell suits from the 1980s. Also among the most loved fashion items of the past were leather biker jackets, dungarees and band t-shirts. The research, commissioned by Samsung to celebrate the launch of the new Samsung AirDresser, also revealed how a number of these memorable trends are still considered wardrobe staples – with one in four saying skinny jeans are one of their fashion must-haves. A quarter of women favour an LBD, and one in 10 adults have a leather biker jacket. As a result, two-fifths feel today's fashion is mostly made up of old styles and trends which are mak

Where Dance and Fashion Collide

This conversation is part of The Big Ideas, a special section of The Times's philosophy series, The Stone, in which more than a dozen artists, writers and thinkers answer the question, "Why does art matter?" The entire series can be found here. Iris van Herpen and Damien Jalet are known for pushing boundaries in their respective fields. Ms. van Herpen, a Dutch fashion designer, fuses traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to create sculptural forms. She has dressed Beyoncé, Björk and other performers, and has designed costumes for the Paris Opera and the New York City Ballet. Mr. Jalet, a Belgian-French choreographer, often experiments with perspectives and blends visual art into his presentations. He has collaborated with Thom Yorke, Madonna, Paul Thomas Anderson and many others. In early May, we asked Ms. van Herpen and Mr. Jalet to discuss the creative process, the importance of originality and why art matters in our modern times. This is an edited transcript

The Hidden Meanings Behind Royal Wedding Dresses

Gambar
Image: Pool/Max Mumby/Getty Image Pool/Max Mumby/Getty Image For those who don't know, royal wedding dresses are beautiful, and they never fail to impress -- even the ones that don't leave us all starry-eyed and gasping in wonder. We love them, but a big part of the reason why goes beyond our favorite gowns' luxurious fabric, impressive tailoring, or delicate, modern design.  Many royal wedding dresses go beyond looks -- way beyond. Brides often make sure that they are as meaningful and symbolic as they are memorable. They use wedding dresses to communicate love, respect, admiration, and a sense of belonging to the public, to the queen, and to their grooms. They pay homage to their own families, as well as the royal one they're about to join. They pay tribute to their own love stories -- and why not? It's why everyone is gathered in the church in the first place!     Royal brides didn't always do this. There was a time when wedding gowns simply serv

Lea Michele Turns the Most Coveted Nap Dress Into a Poolside Maternity Dress

Gambar
Lea Michele has been sharing plenty of pregnancy pictures as she gears up to be a new mom, and let's just say the free-flowing, romantic dresses continue to impress. After first introducing us to her maternity style in a gorgeous blue maxi, Lea went on to share her first bikinigram with her new bump, and now she's lounging poolside in every woman's coveted nap dress of the moment: the Sleeper Atlanta midi with a shirred bodice, pouf sleeves, and off-the-shoulder neckline, coming in a lightweight linen that's as perfect for lounging around the house as it is for posing poolside on a warm summer day. Lea accessorized the look with a long white ribbon in her hair, sunglasses, and earrings, even posting a few extra shots for her followers at a different angle near the hammock. "Reflection looking a little different these days," she captioned the photo series. We can't wait to see what breezy, bohemian inspired thing Lea puts on next, but until then, read a

Fashion designer showcases the future of the runway with 3D models

Mvuemba released the latest collection for her fashion brand, Hanifa, on Instagram live on Friday. During the show, the models sashayed down the screen with their outfits draped on their headless, three-dimensional bodies. The Pink Label Congo collection featured pants and dresses in vibrant colors on virtual models for its fashion show, and has been described as the future of runway fashion by spectators. Mvuemba, whose previous designs have been worn by celebrities such as rapper Cardi B and singer Kelly Rowland says she already had plans to go digital with her collection before various Covid-19 restrictions were put in place around the world. Mvuemba said during the launch that each of the outfits represents Congo, the central African country where she is from and which is one of the world's leading producers of cobalt, accounting for more than 60% of the world's production. Cobalt is a chemical element used in producing smartphones, tablets and electric vehicles. One of the

The 5 best dress watches for businessmen according to an expert watch consultant

Andrew Hildreth is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and a watch consultant to Christie's and Christie's Education. He recommends these five watches that anyone can confidently wear in any situation, from a challenging 8 a.m. work meeting to a glamorous evening cocktail. A dress watch should be timeless, fit with both formal and casual wear, and be both clean and elegant, he says. From the original Patek Philippe Calatrava to the presidential Rolex Day-Date, these watches have adorned the wrists of greats. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. A watch is as much a part of a well-dressed man's attire as his shoes or tie. It should complete the ensemble without drawing attention to itself: always in style, with any choice of formal or casual wear, suffering none of the vagaries of fashion. It should look as appropriate now as it would have 20 years ago or two decades from now. Not surprisingly, the style and

Best Fashion Instagrams of the Week: Charli XCX Imaan Hammam and More

Gambar
First, let's recap the past several days with some good news: This week, it was Adwoa Aboah's birthday. The model turned 28 last Monday and celebrated with quite the uplifting look. She posted an Instagram of herself, presumably from her home in London, in a slinky black dress, a jumbo paper clip necklace with cut-out stars, and a DIY crown made from chenille stems. Remember that crafty activity from childhood? Nothing like a throwback to simpler times. Of course, Aboah wore her signature gold earrings, too. Fellow Brit Charli XCX has also been enjoying her time in lockdown at home. The musician posed for a saucy mirror selfie to announce her playlist release on Spotify. She leaned into a Victorian look to chronicle the moment, sporting a low cut, ruffle trim decolletage-revealing blouse by Area along with a pair of Y/Project strappy pointy-toe blue boots. A modern touch? Aside from the iPhone, she donned teeny tiny Y2K style butterfly clips. Meanwhile in New York, the costume

Mini dresses: from puff sleeved to paisley this summer max out on the mini

The latest lifestyle, fashion and travel trends For a minute there, it felt like a midi length might remain the dress hemline of choice for all eternity. So ubiquitous, long-lasting (and continuing) has the midi's popularity been, many of us had totally forgotten the joys of a saucier hemline, and in the process very much neglected to pop a pin and flash a knee. This summer, though, the mini dress makes a triumphant and, in my o

Meghan Markle’s BFF Jessica Mulroney‘s Fashion Advice for Brides

Duchess Meghan's Inner Circle: Meet Her Closest Friends The inspiration behind the collab? The lack of diversity available when it comes to bridal party outfits. 9 Dupes Of Marianne's Black Dress In 'Normal People' To Wear This Summer

Gambar
I think it's fair to say we're all Normal People-obsessed. The recent BBC series re-ignited our love for the story written by Sally Rooney, which we first devoured in the summer of 2018. Everything about the TV adaptation was spot on, from the chemistry between the two characters to the glorious locations. The clothes were also note-worthy, with Marianne's wardrobe sticking out in particular. In fact, the dress she wore during her summer trip to Italy has become one of her most talked-about looks. Want to recreate it? I've found nine dupes for Marianne's black dress for you to rock this summer. The wardrobe for both Connell and Marianne has been hugely praised by fans, both for representing the characters and inspiring our own fashion choices. In fact, Connell's beloved silver chain necklace he wears throughout the series now even has its own Instagram fan page. As mentioned, for Marianne, it was all about this gorgeous black sun dress she rocked during the grou

The Best Fashion Instagrams of the Week: Kim Kardashian West Ariana Grande and More

Gambar
Kim Kardashian West had something huge to celebrate this past week. It wasn't a birthday or an anniversary, but rather a new milestone on Instagram: she has amassed a whopping 170 million followers. In her home, KKW rang in the number wearing something, well, very KKW: a body-skimming mini grass green dress with diamante-encrusted cups. To match the burnt orange stripe down the dress's side, she accessorized the look with none other than a tiny Birkin bag of the same hue. Our only question is this: How far in advance did she plan this ensemble? Ariana Grande, by comparison, showed off a simpler look on Instagram. The singer, who just released her duet with Justin Bieber "Stuck With You," posted a photo of her relaxing in a simple gray sports bra and a pair of high-waisted blue jeans. After all, it's an easy work-from-home look that feels real. This week we even saw some posts from outside of the house. As France relaxed its restrictions and many people headed back

Nine of the best floral dresses for your lockdown picnic

It's now been nearly two months since lockdown began. If, like us, you abandoned dressing up for the duration of self-isolation (because it's nice to live in your pyjamas), it's time to dig out the summer dresses. There's a heatwave coming, and prime minister Boris Johnson has given us the green light on having park picnics (alone or with someone from the same household). To celebrate this small lockdown win, why not invest in a new summery dress to wear for the upcoming hot days? We have rounded up the best floral dresses on the high street right now and you can order them all to your front door (physical stores are still shut). From bohemian designs to show-stopping styles, here are nine summer dresses to buy in 2020. Amazon Is Finally Getting Its Fashion Cred

Gambar
Toothpaste, the new Jenny Offill novel, an eight-pack of paper towels—and throw in a prairie dress? Amazon announced today that it is partnering with our neighbors-in-non-pandemic-times Vogue for its Common Thread initiative, an effort to support American designers struggling as a result of the novel coronavirus. As a result, the Everything Store will sell pieces by designers like Batsheva (responsible for the prairie dress phenomenon), Gigi Burris (who made Mahershala Ali's formal Oscar beanie in 2019), and Tabitha Simmons, as well as a small selection of menswear by 3.1 Philip Lim, Ryan Roche, Jonathan Cohen, and sunglasses designer Krewe. The effort is officially called "Common Threads: Vogue x Amazon Fashion," and Amazon will also donate $500,000 to the A Common Thread fund, which Vogue established in partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) earlier this spring. This represents a major victory for Amazon, which has long struggled to forge a

Umbrellas Are 1950s Fashion’s Most Essential Accessory—Come Rain or Shine

Gambar
This story is part of a series, Past/Present, highlighting images and articles from Vogue that have personal significance to our editors. To most people umbrellas are markers of rain and shields against the elements, but to me, they are special occasion accessories. I've devoted much of my wardrobe to mid-century vintage because it makes me entirely happy and I have a special collection of umbrellas to help complete the look. As I see it, umbrellas are to the rain what sunglasses are to the sun—and who doesn't love sunglasses? My enduring fascination with the brolly was piqued in graduate school when studying early Dior looks. Image searches delivered photos of swan after smiling swan; behatted, begloved, and pretty often, carrying an umbrella. Not for rain, mind you, but for fashion. Hooked like an umbrella's curved handle, I dedicated my thesis to the subject, which necessitated spending several months looking at umbrellas in Vogue. Nice work if you can get it. What I fin

Quarantine fashion: buyers ditch PJs for elevated loungewear

The Mother-Daughter Duo Taking Socially-Distanced Fashion to the Streets of Paris

While many have found themselves in unexpected living situations following the rollout of lockdowns around the world due to the COVID-19 crisis, the French artist MarieVic's is particularly unusual. After leaving her current home in New York to return to Paris, in order to be close to her family during the pandemic, she found herself staying at a second apartment owned by her mother, Geneviève. Comprising of just two rooms, MarieVic is sleeping in one; the other, however, is packed to the brim with pieces from Geneviève's extraordinary collection of designer fashion and couture. "When I arrived, I had to self-quarantine and I felt displaced," MarieVic explains. "I couldn't see my family or my friends, and I missed my work studio, so I started spending a lot of time in the wardrobe, working on dressing up, making relationships with clothes." After her period of quarantine was over, MarieVic saw her permitted hour-long periods of daily exercise as an oppor

Why Cottagecore and Prairie Dressing Are Fashion’s Biggest Trends in 2020

Gambar
Long prairie dresses, bucolic countryside scenes with clothing lines drying in the sunlight, puffy sleeves, sunglasses, and gingham: These are just a few of the aesthetic references that relate to cottagecore, which is quickly becoming one of the biggest fashion subcultures in 2020. If you've scrolled through TikTok lately, you've likely seen the tags #cottagecore or #farmcore along with some of this aforementioned imagery. It's true that cottagecore is not just a fashion subculture, but an idealized lifestyle that goes hand in hand with floor-sweeping prairie dresses and quilted jackets. Knitting, crocheting, baking, and sewing are some of the activities that cottagecore content usually includes. According to the Urban Dictionary, the exact definition of cottagecore is: "A niche aesthetic based around the visual culture of an idealized life on a Western farm. Common themes include sustainability, gardens, farm animals, rural living, and nature." And while the wor
